Ischemic brain injuries: the need for new neuroprotective strategies
نویسنده
چکیده
Ischemic injury occurs when the blood supply to the tissue is cut off. The length of time a tissue can survive under ischemic insults varies, but eventually all ischemic tissues become apoptotic and/or necrotic (Lipton, 1999). The major pathophysiological effects are caused by the reduction in the oxygen and glucose levels, followed by the renewal of blood supply, responsible for the oxidative damage to the tissue (Mehta et al., 2007). brain tissue has a complex differential sensitivity towards ischemic insult. Astrocytes can survive from energy deprivation for a prolonged period and are most sensitive to the burst of reactive oxygen species, on the other hand neurons are highly sensitive to oxygen and glucose deprivation (Hertz, 2008). Therefore, global brain ischemia triggers a complex series of biochemical and molecular mechanisms that impairs the neuNeuroprotection by human umbilical cord bloodderived progenitors in ischemic brain injuries

Neuroprotective Effects of Exercise on Brain Edema and Neurological Movement Disorders Following the Cerebral Ischemia and Reperfusion in Rats
Introduction: Cerebral ischemia and reperfusion causes physiological and biochemical changes in the neuronal cells that will eventually lead to cell damage. Evidence indicates that exercise reduces the ischemia and reperfusion-induced brain damages in animal models of stroke. In the present study, the effect of exercise preconditioning on brain edema and neurological movement disorders followin...
متن کاملUsing the endocannabinoid system as a neuroprotective strategy in perinatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury
One of the most important causes of brain injury in the neonatal period is a perinatal hypoxic-ischemic event. This devastating condition can lead to long-term neurological deficits or even death. After hypoxic-ischemic brain injury, a variety of specific cellular mechanisms are set in motion, triggering cell damage and finally producing cell death. Effective therapeutic treatments against this...

متن کاملNeuroprotection in acute brain injury: an up-to-date review
Neuroprotective strategies that limit secondary tissue loss and/or improve functional outcomes have been identified in multiple animal models of ischemic, hemorrhagic, traumatic and nontraumatic cerebral lesions. However, use of these potential interventions in human randomized controlled studies has generally given disappointing results. In this paper, we summarize the current status in terms ...
متن کاملP 40: Neuroprotective Effects of Saffron Extract in Rat Brain Under Ischemia Reperfusion Model
Introduction: There are several different molecular pathways in tissue damage by Ischemic Brain Injury. The use of antioxidants and free radical scavengers are a matter of attention by some researchers. Crocus sativus (saffron) is used previously for protective effects in ischemia state by some researchers. To assess pathologic aspects of neuroprotection of saffron in some susceptible brain are...
